Women are just starting to learn the benefits of mineral makeup. Unlike what we've been using for years, mineral makeup powders are lightweight, easy to apply, versatile, and stay on all day. Because they are composed of minerals, they are hypo-allergenic, won't clog your pores, and are perfect for even problem skin, such as rosacea or acne.
It seems that everyone is jumping on the mineral makeup bandwagon, regardless of the quality. More importantly, I have found many of the more popular, well known names to be a lesser product. I was first introduced to a bare minerals makeup by a friend after confiding in her that I take such poor care of my skin, that I even go to sleep with my makeup on. She suggested I try Bare Minerals, a product "you can even sleep in". I was really happy with the ease of applying and the lightweight feeling. But upon further inspection, I noticed a few things. Many of these top names contain bismuth oxychloride - a known skin irritant. Companies get away with selling mineral makeup containing bismuth as it is a mineral. Just not a natural one; it's a byproduct of lead and copper processing. Ick - do you want lead & copper byproducts on your face? Last week, a nationwide makeup manufacturer widely carried in grocery and drug stores came out with a "mineral make up" - who's first ingredient listed is talc!
RULE #1: Read the ingredients. The most popular mineral makeup company's top selling product is their mineral veil - an added layer to keep your makeup on your face - and an added cost. After reading ingredients, the field is narrowed down quite a bit. Next important thing to look for: how much are you getting for your money? Most foundations come in a 20 or 30 gram jar, but the net weight is only 2 or 3 grams of product. I found myself plunking down $60.00 for a jar of foundation, only to find that although the container was large, the amount of actual powder was only 3 grams.
RULE #2: Compare net weight of products. Don't get lulled in by pretty packaging that makes it look like you're getting more than you actually are. Because of these misleading properties, and finding a true lack of value, I began to carry my own line of mineral makeup. None of my products contain bismuth, talc, or any other unwanted ingredient: just mica, zinc oxide, and iron oxides, for the most part. And no mineral veil is necessary. We do offer setting powders, as well concealers and color correctors, but our setting powders are designed for the person who wants less luminescence. Foundations have a full 6 grams per jar. You buy what you want, when you want it. No pre-assembled packages (though we do sell starter kits, YOU pick each color), no clubs to join.
Even beyond foundations, I love the versatility of mineral powders. I like playing around and using different colors, and love the idea that any shadow can also become an eyeliner with the use of a wet eyeliner brush.
The one thing that always irked me was that I have puffy eyelids - all other mineral makeups I tried all had iridescent colors only. Shimmer is the LAST thing I need on my upper eyes. With that in mind, I made sure that I carried not only shimmery eye colors, but semi-matte and matte colors as well.
I invite you to check out PurelyCosmetics and try the product for yourself. You too, will see the variety, value, and high quality.
