How often should cosmetic brushes be washed?
And is it ok to use regular antibacterial soap or do you need some special brush shampoo?
Personally, I wash my liquid foundation brushes before and/or after each use. This prevents the harboring of bacteria and the two/tone color from leftover aged product. For powder foundation and/or powder products, such as blush, bronzer, powder and shadow brushes, I do so once a week, or every couple of weeks, depending on how much I've been using them and/or how dirty they look. If they're relatively cleaner or dirtier than usual, you can adjust cleanings based on that.
I like mac brush cleanser, but I feel that for me, it goes too fast, so I only use it for deep cleaning purposes. I use redken shampoo on my huge, fluffy powder brushes, as well as my kabukis, and plain antibacterial hand soap (fragrence and residue free, if at all possible), on my shadow brushes. I sometimes use a minimal amount of dish washing liquid on my liquid foundation brushes, because I feel it gets them the cleanest, but you MUST be sure to rinse well. It's pretty much all on personal preference, and what I have around the house at the time. Regular eye makeup remover diluted in glass with water and a wash cloth works wonders, too.
Quick word of advice, do *NOT* soak your brushes, especially not in hot water, as it will, in most cases, crack the handle, and over time melt the glue and loosen the brush hairs. If you do soak them, do not do so over the base of the brush (where the brush meets the handle), as it will detereorate your brushes more quickly.
