Do shower gels, shampoos, and other bath products really expire?

.....As in, turn rancid and change in consistency (i.e. become thicker)? I heard they do, but only after being opened and used. I thought only makeup, lotions, cheap fragrances and stuff like that expired. the reason I'm asking is because I went to TJ Maxx last night and bought a Philosophy 3-in-1 shower gel set. It has two full size shower gels, but I was dumb and didn't look at the date (I just figured at the time, hey the price is right, so I think I'll get it!) Yeah, no. I really need to stop doing that. I got home and looked on the box, and to my horror, it was manufactured in 2006! And I looked on the back of one of the shower gels, and it said it was good for 24 months. yikes! They smell fine, but they are a bit thick. I've already used them once, and didn't notice any problems in lathering or change of smell or anything. I don't know TJ Maxx's return policy. Are these safe to continue to use, 'assuming' they've never been opened and used?

I googled it and it said that after 3 years shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel expire. I wouldn't suggest using them due to, as you said, chemical composition changing and that COULD (not saying it has, will, etc.) create an unsafe mixture.
