THE BEST LIGHT FOR APPLYING MAKEUP

How is the lighting where you apply your makeup?  Are you applying your makeup in a bathroom or bedroom with one bright light above your head?  Is that one overhead light casting some pretty bad shadows on your ****** features, making it difficult for you to judge how much color to apply to your eyes, lips and cheeks?

Understanding proper lighting and using that lighting while applying your makeup makes a big difference in how your makeup looks.  The better your face is lit, the more even your makeup application will be, helping you to achieve a pretty and natural finish.  Beware if you are applying your makeup in a dimly-lit room - it is easy to overdo your application.

So when possible try to apply your makeup in a well-lit area.  It is very helpful to be by a window for natural light.   Natural daylight is the very best light for checking your makeup blending skills and intensity of the colors you've applied. In natural daylight, it is easy to see if you need to add color in some areas or tone down the amount of color in other areas.  You can check your makeup application by looking in a mirror either next to a window or by going outside.  "I have had to prepare many poorly-lit areas for makeup application in my 18+ years as a makeup artist, even removing lamp shades to get better lighting on the face of my subject!  And no matter what the lighting was on-set, when possible I almost always took my subject outside to check his or his makeup in natural daylight," says Jennifer Kalman, Commercial Makeup Artist and Founder of www.QDazzleProm.com.  If your makeup application looks great in natural daylight, it will look great in most other settings, even in fluorescent office lights or soft evening lights.

Once you've settled yourself near a good light for applying your makeup, here's another helpful tip.  For best results during your makeup application, while holding your mirror to apply your makeup be sure to turn your face (and mirror) up toward the light source, whether your light source is a lightbulb or the the natural daylight outside a window.  By doing this, you can achieve an even coverage of light on your face while you apply your makeup so that no shadows will distort the amount of color you apply.  For example when applying blusher, if one side of your face is in a shadow and one side of your face is in the light, you might be tempted to apply more blush on the side in the shadow because there is little light on that side of your face and you're unable to clearly see the amount of color you have already applied.

Of course, sometimes it is not possible to apply or at least check your makeup in natural daylight.  In these cases, try to find the brightest indoor lighting possible.  Then use the above tip of turning your face and mirror toward the light source so that there are no shadows on your face while you apply your makeup.

When you're aware of the lighting around you before applying your makeup, you will have the best results with your makeup application.

Has anybody used these Mary Kay products ?

- Tinted Moisturizer
- Eyeliner
- Cheek Color

I have fair skin with freckles, so I don't want complete coverage.
I'd prefer something more along the lines of sheer to medium.
Currently I'm using Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, but I can't
afford to keep paying $42.00 a bottle. I found Mary Kay products,
and realized they were quite more affordable than products from
Sephora. If you use any of the products listed above, could
you please tell me how they've worked for you, and if they
work well ? And if not do you have any recommendations for
cosmetics under $30.00 ?

I use (and sell) all of them. The tinted moisturizer is wonderful. Nice and sheer but still gives you color. The eyeliner are sticks not pencils which for me, gives a smoother line. And the cheek colors are mineral colors so they are worth the price. The cheek color should last at least 6 months.

I'm just curious here. If my skin is fair tan with a little pink blush on the cheeks,which of these dyes can suit me well enough?

do i use bronzer, foundation, or cover up first?

so for christmas, i got alot of reallly nice mary-kay makeup, but im confused as to which i put on first and second and so on.
this is what i got-
bronzer, mineral cheek color, mineral bronzing powder, mineral powder foundation, and concealor.

please can you tell me the order i put all these things on ? THanks!!(:

First you put on foundation, then the concealer, then the bronzer powder OR bronzer (if you use both, you will be SUPER dark), then the mineral blush. Hope I Helped!!!!

Adding soft, otherworldly colors to a black and white photo can lend an antique feel to even the most modern subjects. The colors can add a life-like blush to the cheeks of a child, or draw attention to a single element, like a bride's bouquet or a sunset sky. Whether you are incorporating a photo into a craft or composing a scrapbook page, consider using this effective technique for making your images special.

The art of photo tinting began in the 1840s, when artists first brushed colored oils on sepia-toned daguerreotypes (an early photographic method) for a touch of realism. Most often, coloring was limited to a little pink on the lips and cheeks. The more artistic tinters would color hair, clothing, flowers, and even add metallic highlights for buttons or jewelry. Many of these early tinting artists were applying skills from the preceding era, when miniature likenesses were hand-painted on ivory. Today, tinting photography is an art rarely practiced by hand, but more often as a digital enhancement technique found in some computer graphics programs.

You can tint your own black and white photos or illustrations in several ways.

  • Purchase photo tinting pens or markers at your craft store. They are made in many color shades and several tip sizes. Most work best with matte finished images. Go lightly and let it dry before inking over the same spot, since getting the paper too saturated may blemish the photo.
  • Photo-tinting oils can be applied with a brush or cotton swab. For this method, you should spray the photo surface with a matte-finish protective coating first. The colored oils have a long drying time, so it is possible to blot or even wipe off excess color as you work. Let these photos dry for several days before handling them.
  • Watercolors, oil pastels and oil colored pencils can be used to add subtle color. With watercolors, some tinters recommend soaking the photo paper in water for 15 minutes, then blotting it dry before you brush on watercolor paint. This allows the paint to be absorbed into the paper rather than sit on the surface, making a softer shade. Oil pastels are most effective when you saturate the area to be colored with a solvent (turpentine or mineral spirits) before you apply the pastel with a cotton swab, cotton ball or brush. If the image is very detailed, you can use oil-based colored pencils, using the same solvent method as for pastels. Always apply lightly at first to control the color intensity.
  • For digital images, use your computer graphics program (like Adobe Photoshop or Corel PaintShopPro) to add color. You can even start with a color photo, duplicate the photo as a second layer, change the top layer to black and white (desaturate the color), and then selectively erase the top layer where you want the original color layer to show through. Alternatively, you can turn your original image to black and white (desaturate the color) and then colorize elements in your photo using the colorfill or brush tools in the graphics program. You will have to create a new layer for each color you add.

When altering photos, protect your original and work with a copy. With any of these methods or products, follow the manufacturer's labeling and instructions. You'll be rewarded with a photographic effect both nostalgic and beautiful.

The O-Glow Intuitive Cheek Color is really awesome, it's so pretty and universal, it's completely my "go-to" blush when I'm running out the door because it's just goof-proof.

Photo Finish Foundation Primer is a really nice product, I personally love it, but I know people don't like it because of the silicone feel but to me, it's just smooth and silky and makes my foundation glide on.

The Smashbox Reflection High Shine Lip Gloss is nice and pretty and smooth, but I generally don't like spending so much on a lip gloss. Not bad though (I do like Smashbox's other lip glosses, they're super sticky but they last like you wouldn't believe).

want to return my Mary Kay lipstick and exchange cheek color after 2 months...can i do that?

I need to know more details about mary kay return policy. I bought a mary kay cream lipstick 2 months ago and it doesnt glide on smoothly on me (whipped berries) and it makes my lips feel so dry and sticky. I kind of dont want to contact my agent again because of something personal (she tried too hard to get me to do what she does) I also bought a compact and a few brushes as well as some other products which I love. Also I need to exchange my cheeck color into a less prominant one. How can I do that? I think I bought these in august or september so am I too late to even concider returning?? How long does their return policy last?
I called the 1-800 number and guess what? the lady told me that i have ABSOLOUTELY NO CHOICE, i cant ship it to them... she said i MUST contact my independent consultant... and that the only thing i can do. I'm so disappointed in Mary Kay. they promise way too much in the beginning and dont really seem helpful when we are in need!!!
