If you are aged 40 or older and you choose the wrong makeup it can make you look older and draw attention to the imperfections that you would rather conceal. Makeup should enhance your features rather than cover them up. Makeup that is formulated for younger women does not work for older women due to their heavy textures, saturated colors and shiny particles that only emphasize lines, creases, wrinkles and pores. Mature women need makeup products that are lightweight, sheer and shimmer-free.

There are many elements of face makeup that influence how it will look on your face including:

Makeup texture Makeup finish – matte or shimmer Makeup color, shade or tint Formula composition: Powder, cream or liquid Oily, drying, moisturizing, skin balancing etc.

Lauren Hutton, longtime model and actress, developed her own line of signature brand cosmetics, “Good Stuff” at a time when there were few makeup products on the market that worked well for her as a mature, older woman. Lauren’s makeup is formulated for mature women with no mica, pearl or filler, all of which falls into lines and wrinkles making them more apparent. The powder formulations also have less pigment than standard make up because as women age, their color begins to fade so highly pigmented make up can give a clownish appearance.

The secret to skin that looks even in tone and nearly free of fine lines and pores is applying foundation conservatively (a nickel-sized dollop for the whole face) and using the sheerest formula you can get away with, says Tim Quinn, celebrity makeup artist. The heavier you apply your makeup, the more apt it is to sink into and emphasize any irregularities in texture.

As with all makeup you need to start with your skin at its best – clean and moisturized so your foundation with go on with the smoothest finish. Hydration is a health benefit as well as a beauty tip, since beauty is more than skin deep. Tim Quinn lists hydration as his number one makeup tip for women over forty, as follows:

Tim Quinn’s Makeup Tips for Women Over 40:

1. Stay hydrated.

At any age it is important to drink plenty of water. When we are well hydrated our skin is less dry. Moist skin and lips always give a more youthful appearance. Dewy skin is naturally luminous.

2. Wear a foundation that matches your skin tone.

Before buying a foundation, test this face makeup where it belongs – on facial skin and not the back of your hand which often is not the same tone.

3. Don’t create a visible line around your lips, avoid brighter and deeper colors and choose more neutral shades.

Darker colors tend to bring your overall appearance down, a more neutral and natural shade will bring your look up and brighten your whole face.

4. Prevent under-eye cover-up creasing; don’t wear cakey concealer.

To prevent under-eye cover-up creasing, apply a rich eye cream both before and after your concealer. The moisturizing ingredients in an eye cream refresh the makeup and keep it from growing cakey. Quinn recommends keeping your eye cream in your makeup bag, then lightly tapping it on over your makeup throughout the day.

how do i wash my makeup brushes and get them to feel soft again?

i have some nice brushes so i washed them with shampoo and then i put some conditioner on them , rinsed and air dried. but now they feel scratchy on my face. how do i fix it?

I wash my brushes with either the cleanser I use on my face, Dr. Bronners castile soap or a natural baby shampoo.

Sometimes though, even soft brushes will get rough after washing...they may or may not be fixable, unfortunatley.

Good luck. If they are still rough, try getting synthetic brushes from Lumiere Mineral Cosmetics. They simply are fabulous & they remain soft wash after wash. I love them & they are so worth the money...which really isn't very expensive. I have so many cosmetic brushes in my collection (different synthetics, Italian Badger, high quality goat, sable & even squirrel blend) and Lumiere's are my favorite. These are the best for my ultra sensitive skin. I will never buy animal hair again!

MAC normally sells individual brushes. But during the holiday season, they sell Special Edition (Short Handled) brushes. 5 brushes come in the set and they sell 3 different sets. It is cheaper than buying them seperately.

If you can't wait till the holidays, or if you are looking for cheaper alternative, then try Posh brushes from Pharmaplus. I know not all pharmapluses in Toronto carry the sets (The one at College and Bay does). Otherwise try Annabelle brushes from Shoppers Drug Mart.

i use REALLY clean fingers.. i find it melts the product to my skin and looks natural, while giving me more coverage... i seem to use less when i use my fingers.. just make sure you remove the oils with a really good wash so they dont mix with the foundation and do something funky.

also, because it's cream and really thick, you shouldn't be applying it ALL over your face, just on the places you need it.. if you want your whole face covered, use a liquid foundation.

mineral makeup vs using powder from compact?

I'm wondering whether using mineral makeup, .e.g. from bare escentuals as a light cover-up or to blot shine is any different in terms of coverage from using my makeup brush and applying lightly from my powder compact?

You would think that gorgeous hair can be achieved overnight with so many hair products out in the market. But no matter how many expensive shampoos and conditioners you have used, nothing can equal the importance of regularly brushing your hair the right way.

How to put on makeup? any tips?

I am a girl who never puts on make up..but my ball is coming!!I asked some of my friends for help, and I am so confused with "powder" "foundation" etc now.I don't even know what to put first! and what are they for. I got foundation, pink eye shadow,eye shimmer , pink shimmer puff and some blush, and that's all i have, what else would i need? and i don't know what blush colour can make me look more natural..(i am an asian).Can anyone tell me what else will i need and how to put them on in order? if u can, please tell me what are they used for too....Thanks!!!

Well just to let ya know if u have any questions about makeup or style just ask me because i am a makeup artist/style consultant.

First:

Make sure u pick the right one for your skin type oily, normal, combination, etc

Second:

First make sure u have the right color that blends in with your skin color, so u wont look to wild or anything.
make sure u have clean brushes, and make sure u clean you face with a facial mask or facial wash so that everything is clean and fresh, dont forget to mosisturize.

Third: Is get ready to apply here it is.

1. Apply a concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation. Dot it on over any blemishes or under-eye circles and blend with your fingertips or a makeup sponge. If your concealer tends to cake, apply eye cream first.

2. Choose foundation that matches your skin tone exactly. Apply it in dots over the central part of your face, then blend it out with a makeup sponge or your fingertips until it covers your entire face (see Related eHows).

3. Use a loose or pressed powder to keep foundation and concealer on longer. Use pressed powder to touch up when you're away from home.

4. Do your eyebrows next. Use powdered eyebrow shadow on brows instead of pencil, which can often look unnatural. Apply it with a hard, slanted brush.

5. Choose three colors of eye shadow: light, medium and dark. Use the dark only to line your upper eyelid, in a fairly thin line along the upper lashes. Use the medium shade for the crease and the lightest shade for the area under the eyebrow. There are many variations on eye shadow application techniques (see Related eHows).

6. Apply eyeliner. Use a cake eyeliner with a damp, thin liner brush, or an eyeliner pencil, and line the lower lid below the lashes. Line only the outer two-thirds of the lower lid, or all the way across if you're trying to achieve a darker look. Line all the way across the upper lid (just above the lash line and as close to the lashes as possible), or start the line where your lashes begin.

7. Apply mascara to upper and lower lashes, in two thin coats to avoid clumpiness. Choose brown mascara if your coloring is fair; black or brown-black works well for darker coloring. Or try a colored mascara such as navy or plum for fun, but don't go too bright if you want to be taken seriously.

8. Smile to find the apples of your cheeks, and apply blush to the apples or below, whichever you prefer. If you have to blend in blush, it's too bright.

9. Choose a lipstick color that's suited to your skin tone and that's perfect for your day look. You can mix colors and textures to suit your moods and your outfits.

10. Line lips after applying lipstick, not before. That way you won't end up with a dark circle of lip liner after your lipstick has worn off. Avoid combining very dark lip liner and pale lipstick.

Other Tips:

Choose brighter or darker tones for a stronger look.

Clean makeup brushes by gently washing them in warm water and mild gel shampoo. Air-dry them overnight.

Don't skimp on makeup tools. High-quality tools make application easier and faster.

If you decide to curl your eyelashes, do this just before applying mascara'never after. Insert your eyelashes into the curler, squeeze just once, and hold for a few seconds.

The sponges waste a LOT of product. I would rather use a brush. Most professionals use a brush. It will last forever if you take care of it. Be sure to clean it after every use with an antibacterial brush cleaner spray. And, once a week under running water with a very gentle baby shampoo. To get a flawless look, apply with the brush in a 'stippling' (like a tapping) motion, NOT a sweeping, wall-painting motion. Good luck.

But now, you often hear either a name like Kevyn's, or star artists Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier, who have their own cosmetic lines, or you witness a celebrity thank their makeup artist during awards broadcasts—either way, we are getting the message loud and clear that professional artists are lurking behind the famous faces we dream of having.

Now, for the quick makeup application tip. First, if you can do without foundation, skip it. Do not forget the moisturizer; your skin needs the extra moisture. If you cannot do without the foundation, the quickest way to apply the foundation is to dot your forehead, chin, nose and cheeks.

Unless you have facials on a regular basis DO NOT get one the week before your wedding day. Facials can pull impurities to the surface, and you do not want to break out the week of your wedding.

Open your eyes wide, keep the pencil in your strong hand and line the top and then the bottom of the eyes. The pencil should not be blunt. In case you decide to use liquid just get a little onto a brush and gently use the tip to transfer the color.

Shadow pencils are not expensive and you can get started with one that costs as little as a dollar. You don't need an extremely dark pencil but it does need to be several shades darker than your own skin. Make sure the pencil is a basic brown and not a coppery color that will look like makeup on your skin. Buy inexpensive pencils to start with until you know which color you prefer and how to apply them correctly.

Self tanner used to be orange and fake looking, but not anymore. With the worry of sun damage on everyone's mind, self tanner has come a long way. Use it all year long so you'll have color in every season; even if your makeup wears off half-way through the night, you won't be left looking pale. Lastly, stock your makeup bag with blotting papers to keep the shine away as the evening wears on
