Makeup has become so much a part of our lives that we cannot imagine a day without basic makeup. Most of us rarely step out of our homes without an eyeliner and a lip balm, even if it's just a trip to supermarket around the corner. A look without makeup makes us feel unpolished and gauche. What Should be Your Everyday Makeup Routine

Cleansing
A fresh face is the basic requirement for any kind of makeup. So begin your day by using a good quality cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and bacteria from your face. Take a small quantity of cleanser on a cotton ball and move it in circular motions on your face. Rinse it off with cold water afterwards (cold water helps to close pores, so that your makeup doesn't enter your skin). Pat dry your face with a clean towel.

Moisturizing
A good quality moisturizer is a must to keep your skin soft and hydrated throughout the day. Moisturizer also creates a barrier between your skin and makeup, thereby protecting it from harsh makeup ingredients. A moisturizer with an SPF over 15 can be your best bet during summer. If you have a fairly even skin or if you do not intend to use foundation, use a tinting moisturizer that can cover up light blemishes. An oil based moisturizer is best for people with dry skin and during months of winter. Whereas, people with oily, acne prone skin should go for water based moisturizers.

Concealing
You may skip this step if you have even, flawless skin. However, most women need cover up of some kind to get rid of blemishes on the face. If you have only slight unevenness in your skin tone, take a part of concealer and a part of moisturizer and apply it evenly all over your face. Larger blemishes can be covered with a base foundation. Concealer should be used to cover dark circles under eyes and puffy eye bags. A cream based concealer is best as it does not accumulate in the creases of the eyes. You may highlight your cheekbones with a rosy or peach cream blush.

Eye Defining
Eyes are your best features, hence do not forget to accentuate your eyes with an eye definition pencil. A black mascara gives your eyes the requisite amount of definition. Usually, you do not need an eyeshadow for everyday eye makeup, as everyday makeup looks subdued than party makeup. Yet, if you insist, you may go for neutral shades of eyeshadow such as pink, beige, coral etc. Avoid use of funky colors like fuchsia, lime green, purple for eyeliner and eyeshadow.
Lip Color
Simply applying a lipstick gives you the desired groomed look. It is of utmost importance to make your lips look healthy and plump. You may apply a lip balm for a more casual look or you may go for high shine lip gloss for a more glamorous look. It is best to avoid lipstick whenever you can as the lipstick ingredients may cause damage to your lips in the long run. A lip balm or lip gloss are perfect for everyday makeup.

The first step before applying makeup is to cleanse, tone, and moisturize the skin thoroughly.
Now apply a tinted moisturizer to give your face a clear, even skin tone, and to avoid the powdery look.
Conceal any under eye dark circles with a concealer, that blends well with your skin tone. You can apply it with your fingertips or with a concealer brush.
Apply a very thin layer of a semitransparent powder to set the makeup base in place. For those with oily skin, this step will also help avoid the shine caused by oily skin.
For makeup to look cute, apply a mild, subtle shade of eyeshadow on the eyes, from the upper lash line to the eyebrows. An eyeliner will make your eyes stand out. No eye makeup is complete without the use of a mascara to volumize the eyelashes.
Apply a very mild pink blush to the cheek bones and blend it well around the area.
For the lips, apply a light, and tinted lip gloss to give it that additional pout. You can go with a lip gloss that has a mild shimmer too.

Sometimes you may want to jazz up your look a bit, by going dramatic with your makeup. See how you can transform yourself into a diva of the night, by following these tips.

Begin by cleansing and moisturizing your face with a light moisturizer. For oily skin, use a toner before applying your moisturizer. This will prevent the shine caused by excessively oily skin.
Apply an even layer of foundation on your skin, one that matches your skin tone. An excess will give the skin an unnatural tone, so be careful. Proceed to use highlighting powder, and under eye concealer.
For dramatic makeup, you have to play up the eyes. Pick out three colors of eyeshadow, as per your choice. However, these shades should proceed from light to dark, and should therefore, belong to the same family of colors. You could start with a light cream, moving to a slightly darker shade, followed by the darkest shade.
Use the lightest color of shadow on your eyelids, starting from the lash line to the eyebrows. Apply it well and let it blend evenly with your skin. To further dramatize the jazz, apply just one line of the eyeshadow below the lower lash line, from the inner to the outer corner of the eye.
The next step is to apply the next, darker shade of eyeshadow. You will apply this from the lash line only up to the eye crease. Now apply the darkest shade using an angled eye shadow brush. This is to be applied above the crease, only the amount of the width of the angled eye shadow brush. Begin with a little eye shadow, and proceed to apply more depending on how dark you want the shade to be. Ensure that you blend all the shades well. Let it proceed from light to dark, naturally.
Use a dark eyeliner pencil, and make the line starting just below the outer corner of the eye. Extend it slightly to create the cat's eye look, and bring it back right up to the inner corner of the eye, above the upper lash line. Now apply a fine line just below but very close to the lower lash line. The upper eyeliner can be slightly thicker.
For the eyelashes, use a good, black mascara to add volume to your lashes. After the mascara dries, dramatize the look further by using an eyelash curler to curl your eyelashes. Also take a look at dramatic eye makeup ideas.
Use a blush on your cheeks that matches your skin tone. If your skin tone is lighter, use a rosy blush, and if it is darker, use a blush of nude shades. Apply it on your cheek bones, and blend it around the area.

Fall/Winter 2010 Makeup Trends

The advent of color films and professional makeup was what tipped the practice of wearing makeup from something that only more affluent members of society did on special occasions to something that just about anyone could access.  The glamor of Hollywood actors and actresses in the 1930s and 1940s got everyone interested in looking like a movie star and the first modern cosmetic companies were born.Now most women and even some men wear makeup on a daily basis.  I studied costuming and stage makeup in college.  Most often, the makeup done for theatrical purposes is "corrective youth makeup" which is a fancy phrase that means "making everyone look as young and aesthetically attractive as possible."  This Hub offers up a variety of tips and tricks I've learned over the years for how to apply makeup.


Tip #1 - Allow Yourself Enough Time:
There's nothing that sets up a makeup disaster better than being in a rush and not really knowing what you are doing. Applying makeup is a skill, and as with any skills, it takes some practice to learn to do it well and quickly. You never know when something is going to go wrong, and when makeup goes wrong it might be something simple or something that requires starting over entirely. If you are going to try something new with makeup fashion, or use a new product that is really different than whatever you've used before, do a makeup practice run ahead of time.

Tip #2 - Start With a Clean Face:
Makeup goes on best over clean skin. Washing your face about a half hour before you are going to start putting on makeup is recommended as then your skin can relax after the washing. This will not only let your skin tone return to its normal shades and tones (hot or warm water will change the appearance) but it allows the pores to close back down, which keeps makeup out of them. Don't do really harsh scrubs, as these can really open up the skin surface and allow the oils and chemicals of makeup to get into the pores, which leads to breakouts later.


Tip #3 - Know What You Are Doing With Your Hair Before You Start Your Makeup:
If you have to do hair styling as well as your makeup fashion, know what you are going to do with it before you do any makeup. Be sure that anything you might do to your hair as far as washing or wetting it is done prior to doing makeup, as one wrong splash could ruin it. Some hairdos require curlers or putting the hair up in some way, and if all you'd need to do is take the hair down and quick style it, then you'll want to do that prior to your makeup. Also, make sure you have a way of keeping your hair out of your face while you do your makeup.


Tip #4 - How To Get The Best Points On Eye And Lip Liners:
Keeping your eye and lip liners in the refrigerator will harden the makeup, and makes it easy to get a super point when sharpening, which is a classic makeup artist trick. However, cold makeup drags and catches when you go to apply it, so they need to be room temperature for actual use. If you are doing fancy makeup in the evening, put those liners on a shelf in the fridge the night before or morning of the big event. Sharpen them before you go to wash your face, and then let them sit out and they will have warmed up appropriately by the time you go to use them.


Tip #5 - Have A Well-Lit Place To Apply Your Makeup:
Even though you may wind up in a dimly-lit restaurant or club, have a well-lit location to do your makeup. When I was in high school, my mom kept all her makeup in the bathroom, but would bring it out in a little basket to the kitchen to makeup her eyes, as there was a mirror on the wall there that had much better light. Being able to see what you are doing makes for a cleaner and more even application. You don't want to look like a painted clown if you make yourself up in dim light and then find yourself standing someplace bright. Put the makeup on in good light, and then check it in more dim light to see the effect if you know you are going to be out someplace darker. If you need to make the look more bold, you can always add more easily. Removing too much makeup is much more difficult.


Tip #6 - Skin Tone and Foundation:
Foundation is the name given to the base layer of makeup that goes on to even out skin tone. Done well, it's literally invisible and done poorly it can looked streaked, caked on, flaking off or like some sort of clown makeup. This is one of the hardest things to do well in applying makeup fashion and is worth taking the time to find a tone that matches your skin, and then practicing putting it on. I recommend foam, triangle sponges or your fingers. Remember, just like the old advertising slogan, "a little dab'll do ya." Don't forget to blend it down onto your neck and out to the ears if you want to avoid the clown face look.


Tip #7 - Blush:
Here's another area where a little is better than a lot. Blush is most often a powdered makeup that most people think is for adding color to cheeks, but really it's about shadowing and contouring the cheekbones and sides of the face. Again, practice makes perfect. Done badly, blush comes off looking like some sort of warpaint accident or an 80s New Wave flashback.


Tip #8 - The Eyes Have It:
I think the biggest thing that people mess up when it comes to applying eye makeup is to overdo it. My mom jokes about eye shadow 'garage doors' that you see on some ladies. You know the look: they blink and it's like a brightly-colored garage door slammed down and then up again. The other eye makeup mistake that's often seen is too much or too heavy an application of eyeliner. Lining all the way around the top and bottom lash line of the eye shrinks it down. Skip the bottom all together for daytime looks, or only put eyeliner on the outer one-third of the lower lash line. And blend and soften your eyeliner with a fingertip. Save those really dark and bold eye lines for nighttime.


Tip #9 - Lovely Lips:
The best lipstick can be like foundation: people don't really notice that you are actually wearing any. Picking a lipstick shade that is like your own lip color but a bit darker can offer a very realistic and subtle effect. Beware of bright pinks and oranges, they can look tacky all too easily. Beware super shiny gloss finishes as they can draw undue attention to the lips. Much like other bold effects, save this for low-light situations or holiday parties.


Tip #10 - Less Is More:
Applying just a little makeup  is usually a better choice than applying a lot. Running short on time? Just powder your face, line your eyes, brush on a touch of shadow, apply lipstick and go.  You can use the exact same makeup for daytime work and a night out dancing, just by applying it lightly for day, and then doing a quick but bold touch-up in just minutes.

Mineral makeup is often selected by Hollywood stars because of its versatility, coverage, and non-comedogenic properties. They wear a lot of makeup, for long periods of time, so choosing a product that will not clog pores is very important, especially when they trade on their looks. No wonder, then, that this particular type of makeup has grown in popularity over the years with other folk as well.

Ingredients of Mineral Makeup
The ingredients listed below play a role in the composition of mineral makeup.

Bismuth Oxychloride
This material adds a slight shine to mineral-based makeup. It is known for its translucent and adhesive properties, and fair absorbency but should be used in moderation as it may cause allergic reactions or irritation in some skin types.

Kaolin Clay
Kaolin clay is very absorbent and increases adhesion as well as oil absorption. This particular material is not good for dry skin types. Average coverage is provided by this mineral makeup ingredient. It has a creamy consistency.

Magnesium Stearate
This mineral is highly adhesive and it has average, matte coverage. This particular mineral improves adhesion in mineral makeup.

Micronized Titanium Dioxide
This particular mineral is translucent and offers UV protection. Though micronized titanium dioxide is more expensive, it offers amazing results.

Rice Starch
Rice starch is considered to be a skin soother and an emollient. This particular mineral makeup ingredient is translucent, with cohesive properties.

Sericite Mica
This particular mineral adds shine to the mineral makeup formulations. The mica has translucent qualities, with adhesion and fair absorbency. It is very silky to the touch.

Talc
Not all mineral makeups use it, but talc can preferred by some because it does not have a dehydrating effect. Kaolin clay tends to be more dehydrating than talc. Translucent and silky are the primary characteristics of talc.

Titanium Dioxide (White)
This mineral provides natural UV protection and is a high coverage mineral whitener.

Zea Mays
Zea mays is also known as corn starch. This mineral makeup ingredient has absorbent properties, silky texture and is translucent. It does not adhere to the skin very well. Zea mays should be combined with other minerals to increase cohesion. Kaolin clay is often used to increase cohesion.

Boron Nitride
This particular ingredient provides adhesive properties and anti-slip properties to mineral-based makeup. It also provides a light and silky texture. This ingredient achieves average coverage but the adhesive properties are high.

Not all mineral makeup contains all ingredients. Some have as few as four! (plus colours).

What makes mineral makeup different?
Mineral make up is lighter and provides more sheer coverage than other types of makeup. It does not clog pores. Regular makeup may provide a brighter and more intense coverage, which is often preferred for artistic effects in modelling shoots. On the downside, regular makeup may breed bacteria, clog pores, or promote allergies and acne.

The History of Face Makeup

The more technologically advance the world becomes, the more emphasis is put upon fresh, clean makeup that conceals visible signs of aging and turns back time. Words like fresh, beneficial, pure, natural, anti-aging have become part of today's makeup vocabulary. Have we come full circle with materials the earth has given as the basis for cosmetics as was the case thousands of years ago?   Did we store the history of how cosmetics began and re-invent the benefits of natural ingredients? To answer these questions we must first take a tour through cosmetic history.

How Did Face Makeup Begin?

We know that for centuries, both men and women have enjoyed the indulgence of face makeup. But the history of face makeup fashion dates thousands of years back to the 1 st Century Egyptians. This is not to say that the Egyptians were the first to use face makeup, rather they were among the first to document the importance of face makeup as an important part of culture as seen in the discovery of ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. Egyptians used natural ingredients such as unguent, a hydrating substance, and kohl, soot, to beautify the skin and appearance.   Egyptians were well aware of the beauty of soft skin and seductive eyes.

The 1 st century also showed the Roman use of kohl for eye makeup and eyelash makeup. The Romans also used chalk as a skin whitener and rouge. The Greco-Roman and Persian influences added the use of henna dyes to stain the face and hair.

Face makeup continued to evolve as did time. By the Middle Ages European cultures added to the popularity of pale skin. Pale skin became known as a sign of wealth and stature in society. Women went to great lengths to achieve white skin by resorting to bleeding themselves. Adding subtle pink as seen by the 13 th century added a further sign of societal wealth and importance. Only the wealthy could afford pink face makeup.

The focus of white skin as a sign of wealth continued into the Italian Renaissance. Again, women went to exaggerated measures to achieve status by using deadly ingredients such as lead and arsenic. By the Elizabethan Age, face makeup began to be associated with poor health. Women turned to egg whites to add a healthy glaze to the face. Heavy face makeup was used to hide disease and illness.

Many thanks to the French in the 18 th century for adding life and vitality back to the face by bringing red to face makeup. Red lips and red cheeks became a symbol of health and fun.

A Slight Decline in Cosmetics

Around the time of the Victorian Era, face makeup fashion began to be associated with prostitutes and actresses. Proper women did not allow sun to alter the skin color nor did they change the natural tone of the skin. Visible skin was covered, parasols were used to protect from the sun's coloring of the skin and keep it light. Natural ingredients such as oatmeal, honey, egg yolks, and rosewater replaced apothecary made cosmetics. The eyebrows were plucked and rice powder was used. Women did attempt to add color in secret by pinching the cheeks or using beet juice for color and lemon juice as a lightener.

By the time the 1900's rolled around, it was very popular to have a sickly look. Under eye circles were emphasized, pink cheeks and crimson lips added to the sickly face makeup. Fortunately, this slight decline was not to last very long.

Modern Makeup

It may be difficult to imagine makeup fashion of the 1900's as modern, but it indeed is the beginning of the cosmetic industry as we see it today. With the rise of mass media, television, cinema pictures, and transportation, the makeup industry grew by leaps and bounds.

While it was still a popular belief in the early 1900's that pale skin was associated with a life of wealth and leisure; tanned skin was associated with the working class, thanks to an old makeup artist, Max Factor, the first perfumed face powder was developed and produced for the public making face makeup assessable to all.

By the 1930's makeup was available to women of al social classes. Women had icons like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich to use as role models.   Cosmetics giants like Max Factor, Elizabeth Arden, Revlon, and Lancôme flourished. Makeup became both sensual and polished. Women had a variety of shades to use and nail polish to match.

Opening the Door

Variety opened the door for the remaining twentieth century into the twenty-first

century. A high demand for environmentally friendly, beneficial, and quality formulas brought forth a new team of makeup companies: Christian Dior and Clinique, providing women with classic makeup and formulas for a variety of skin types.

Full Circle

And so we have come full circle. Today, mineral, earthy formulas that are environmentally safe have dominated the face makeup industry. And there's room for all.
